Cooking and cooking and cooking

So interestingly... after I had given up doing something with my cooking in any kind of formal way... opportunities have started falling into my lap. Life is so funny that way.

I had applied last August for a new private chefing job. I had been cooking for a family that only wanted me for a limited time... the mother was pregnant, and I was cooking to alleviate her nausea (brought on by cooking smells in her house) from her morning sickness. I never heard back from this new family.. and eventually I just forgot about them. I mean, let's face it... I apply to jobs every day, and I rarely hear back from them. Stupid economy...

However, just after Christmas, in the midst of job insanity at the movie theater and children's museum and just trying to pay my bills, I got an email. "Hello Ashley! We loved your resume and application from last summer, but we had decided that we didn't actually need the help. We were wrong... we are drowning in work, and we would love to interview you and see if you'd be a good fit for the position." And the rest is history. I am now cooking 2 meals per week for the family, and it's great. It fits in nicely as a side gig with my movie theater shifts, and the family is totally beyond flattering about my food. "You are a God-send! I've been salivating in my office all afternoon.. what are you making??" It's pretty darn close to the perfect scenario!

A few months ago, out of nowhere, I get a phone call from the lovely Jen W. Her friend is getting married in August and is trying to keep a tight budget, BUT she wants delicious vegetarian food. After turning down the catering opportunity (I mean... 150 person dinner by myself?), she asks me if I might still be interested in doing cupcakes. Well, of course! She wants 200, 4 different flavors, and all vegan... Right up my alley! So we're making Mexican chocolate cupcakes with chocolate mousse, lime cupcakes dipped in Rum glaze and topped with a lime and mint frosting (yay, Mohitos!), raspberry clove cupcakes with buttercream frosting, and Dulce de Leche cupcakes dipped in caramel and topped with a fluffy vanilla frosting. Yum, yum, yum! I plan on taking fabulous pictures to start a portfolio... Could be the start of something fun and lucrative? We shall see....

Two fabulous gigs almost completely by accident!! Maybe the culinary career will eventually take off after all....
